Why people fail at their fitness journey - Fad Diets

The first in a hopefully a series of blogs on why people fail on their fitness and lifestyle journeys.

Seen so many times before. The first one I can remember was the “Atkinson Diet”. People jump
on the latest book, or they heard about from a friend who saw incredible results in just a few short weeks.

Fad diets can be tempting because they promise quick and dramatic weight loss results. However, they are not sustainable and can actually be harmful to your health. Going this route often requires you to eliminate entire food groups or drastically reduce your calorie intake, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies and a weakened immune system.

The human body by design is an adaption machine, we are actually making it harder to lose weight in the future because the body adapts to the extreme low-calorie intake and begins to store more fat in anticipation of the next period of food restriction. The cycle continues getting harder and harder. You see this a lot in the bodybuilding and physique competition world. As competitors finish their latest show they go out and binge to the extreme and whereby making the next round of dieting down even harder to achieve. Yes, there are smart competitors that have learnt how to control for the adaption by slowly reverse dieting out, but which regular "Jo" is going to slowly reverse diet out of their extremely low-calorie restrictive diet? Not many. Trying to lose weight should not be a punishment. Yes, it is hard, but you should never go those extremes.

The key to long-term weight loss success is to focus on developing healthy habits and behaviours around food. This means eating a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrient-dense foods, practicing portion control, and incorporating physical activity and resistance training into your weekly routine. It's also important to address any underlying emotional issues that may be causing you to turn to food for comfort or to cope with stress.

By taking a slow and steady approach to weight loss and focusing on sustainable lifestyle changes, you can achieve your goals and maintain a healthy weight for the long term. Remember, there are no shortcuts or magic diets that will get you there overnight - it takes time, patience, and commitment to make lasting changes.
